SysOperation Framework Data contract parameter name

With so many new AX 2012 R3 implementations and upgrades and the soon-to-be-released AX 7 (Rainier) around the corner I thought it is time to get back in business to publish interesting articles, now using a new home for hosting my blog:

It is always recommended to write best practice error-free code, however in some cases Microsoft forces our hands to fall back to hardcoded values. This is the case with today’s topic as well, when we would like to override values in a SysOperation Framework Data contract.

The SysOperationServiceController.getDataContractObject() method has an optional parameter, where they expect the value of ‘_dataContract’ in the example below. However we can choose to refrain from hardcoding and extract the value with Reflection.

Silent metadata synchronization

When we use the Microsoft Dynamics AX command line parameters to trigger a startup command with running the client, it is a very common situation that our metadata is altered.

There could be many scenarios where the metadata change requires user interaction (like a possible index violation, removing fields, etc) on a form, where you could review the changes before it is permanently committed to the database. This is not ideal if you would like to do automated tasks, like running a workflow step on a Team Foundation Server build controller (code / metadata synchronization, XPO import).

Fortunately there is a way of suppressing this user interaction, by setting a global variable.

PowerShell and AXModel files

In AX 2012 there is a very high chance that you have to work with the new AXModel files.

You may receive an ISV solution, or a Microsoft hotfix and you would like to know what is inside. If you have installed the management extensions, you can go to Start menu > Administrative tools > Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 Management Shell to open PowerShell to access the AX-specific utilities.

We have a hotfix in our example, and would like to see what objects are inside, which may cause a conflict with out customizations. You can run the following command to get more details from our AXModel hotfix:

EDT Migration Tool bugfix

We have a great tool in AX 2012 for upgrading EDT relations to the new structure of Table relations.

Unfortunately it does not handle system data types like UserId very well. You have to change the \Classes\SysEDTMigration to prepare the tool for all types:

AOT node compare

One of the most often used tool is the AOT node Compare utility, which has some improvements from the past but can be changed further.

Now in AX 2012 the compare tool can be executed as CIL code rather than in the X++ runtime tier, which should give you considerable performance boost for larger code comparison. Here is a great post (The compare tool–and running X++ code as IL) from mfp about improvements that Microsoft did.

On the other hand you can do some improvements yourself by adding the following line to the SysCompare class, selectionChanged method:
